FDA Changes Stance On Fish Diet For Pregnant Women

Thursday, April 30th, 2009 by admin

The Food and Drug Administration had a change of heart about its earlier announcement that pregnant women should avoid fish and seafood diet as these may contain mercury.  It is now pushing for the amendment of its previous advisory and wants women to eat more fish for health purposes.

According to the FDA the benefits of eating fish far outweighs the risks.  Among the benefits they cited include the intake of selenium and omega-3 fatty acids which can lead to a three-point boost in a child’s IQ.

An FDA report submitted to the White House shows that women can benefit from eating more fish than the current intake limit of 12 ounces of fish per week. Scientists from the Environmental Protection Agency however criticized the FDA for their report saying it was erroneous.

Eating Sushi Can Lead To Mercury Poisoning

Listen to your doctor when he warns you to go light on sushi. The same warning could have saved Emmy-winning actor Jeremy Piven from the metallic rubbing he got from his favorite sushi and Chinese herbs. His doctors found high levels of mercury in his body which was estimated at six times more than what is normal. Piven’s doctor blamed his high mercury count to Piven’s twice-a-day sushi binge.

Mercury is a silent killer because you do not know you already have too much in your body until you suffer from the symptoms and effects of mercury poisoning including kidney failure, cardiac arrest and even psychiatric disorders.

If you do not want to pursue a career as a human thermometer then better lay off those deliciously tempting sushi plates!

Brown Sugar vs White Sugar

Do not think less of your neighbor because he uses brown sugar.  The truth is, he is not only scrimping but is also protecting his health.  Brown sugar is actually healthier than white sugar because it has a lower caloric value when it comes to weight and not by volume.  As proof, a hundred grams of white sugar contains 396 calories while brown sugar contains only 373 calories.
Health reasons aside, brown sugar is also a very useful home remedy especially for menstrual cramps.  When cane is first crystallized it produces brown sugar which is free from chemicals like sulfur dioxide, surfactants, formic acid and the likes.  White sugar comes as a result of further processing.  The more popular natural brown sugars are called Muscovado and Demerara.

Your doctor may have asked you to stay away from refined and over-processed products because it is one of the culprits behind a host of diseases.  By consuming natural brown sugar you are packing in less calories and a more nutritious product inside your body.
